Spotlight - Wild Fire by Ally Shields

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Description:

A vision. A lost talisman. A dangerous journey through time...

A month after their bonding, Ari and Andreas are still adjusting to married life when they learn the hard way that the O-Seven, the terrifying and brutal vampire elders, still have them in their sights. A three million dollar bounty hangs over each of their heads, and there’s no lack of assassins eager to collect.

When the local seer has a terrifying vision of the destruction of Riverdale, it’s up to Ari—as usual—to keep everyone safe. Only this time, an enemy from the past has bound her fire powers, and the city’s string of arsons seems connected.

Daron, the vampire prince in Toronto, has information that two of the vampire elders are on their way to Riverdale. Which can’t be good. Only a risky and unprecedented journey through time can provide the help they need. But that will leave Andreas to face the O-Seven alone...

Excerpt:

The tracks in the snow gradually moved up the slope toward the older parts of Riverdale, out of the tourist district, past residential homes, angling toward the cliff area that overlooked the Mississippi River. Then it took a sharp swing north.

Ari looked ahead, her gaze following the tracks through the gate and into the Riverdale Cemetery. "I don't like this." She came to a stop with one hand on the gate. "Don't you think the trail is a bit too obvious? As if he wanted us to follow him?" Her eyes scanned the cemetery grounds for anything unusual, a shadow, a hint of color out of place among the stones and crypts. The only sizable tracks went behind a tall mausoleum.

"A trap?" Ryan drew his pistol. "Do you sense something?"

"Maybe. But there is a lot of magical interference in graveyards." Ari frowned. She sensed a flicker of Otherworld power, but it didn't feel right. Shielded? Would a halfling demon be that good? She eased through the gate; Ryan followed close behind. Her magic stirred, raising the hairs on her arms, and she stopped, extending her witch senses to probe the area around them—tasting, smelling, touching the environment. Her magic roared to life.

"Back!" she shouted.

Two gigantic figures leaped from the top of the nearest crypt. A howling rent the quiet of the cemetery. By the time the creatures landed—one in front of Ari and Ryan, and the other cutting them off from the gate—both had morphed into fiery red, eight-foot demons, their eyes deep black holes. Each carried a metal shield and swung a five-foot mace.

"Hellsgate warriors!" Ari crouched, raising her fingers to call the witch fire to her command.

Excerpt:

The Billionaire's Empire

Rebecca POV -Solomon Sloan stands up. “Kara, a word outside?”

The two head out to the hallway, and suddenly I’m left to face Jonathan Sloan—the man from this morning. I should have taken his number then, but I got the sense he was assessing me somehow, with those piercing eyes. He stood too close to me, gave off a captivating energy, and drew me in with his charm when he offered to replace my tablet.

Everything about him was infectious. That’s why I had to get out of there. Just from what I had seen this morning, I sensed a guy like him would leave someone like me needy and vulnerable, or turn me into someone obsessed. Right now, considering that warning Kara gave me, I see my gut feeling was right.

My legs are restless from sitting in Kara’s limousine for too long. Jonathan is staring at me again. I stand up and walk over to the pool table. There are four oil paintings that line the wall behind it. They offer a great distraction, and an excellent reason to avoid his gaze.

“Miss Clark—is it actually Miss?” he asks, getting up and standing beside me as I look on.

“Yes, it’s Miss.”

“Can I call you Rebecca?”

“Yes, yes of course.”

“Rebecca, then. Are you still too busy to let me replace that tablet?”

“I’m beginning to see you’re not one to dance around an issue.”

“It’s never been my style. Is that a yes?”

“The law firm will take care of it. Thank you, Mr. Sloan.”

“Please. Call me Jonathan. How about a drink this week? Or dinner perhaps?”

“Thank you for the offer, Jonathan, but it’s not necessary.”

He scoffs at me and returns to the armchair where he was sitting. I do exactly what Kara says. I do not make eye contact or engage him.

“Haven’t you heard of innocent until proven guilty?”

“Excuse me?”

“You’ve already made up your mind about me, Rebecca.”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“My father calls you to speak about an item, and for whatever reason, I’m already guilty in your eyes.”

“That’s not true. I—”

He turns away from me and looks at the wall near the office door. “You know what, Miss Clark? I don’t believe you would be best suited to have any involvement in whatever my father chooses to do with your firm.”

“Why is that, Mr. Sloan?”

“Admit it. You think I’m guilty.”

“I—I do not. All your father has asked for is advice based on a scenario. How could I believe you’re guilty of a hypothetical situation?”

“What other reason could you possibly have to turn me down for dinner or drinks, Miss Clark?”

“For one,” I start, “I’m very busy at the law firm. I work long hours almost every night.”

He rolls his eyes and I realize I’ve followed him to where he’s standing. Again, we’re inches away from each other. He’s a lot taller than me. I have to crane my neck to look up at him, even in these five-inch pumps. I stand my ground, waiting for his reply. His response surprises me.

He gently places one hand on my shoulder. I do not move. My brain is telling my muscles to move away, but I’m frozen. I feel a heat rise to my face. He snakes the other arm around my waist. My stomach clenches from just his touch. He leans his head in and brings his lips close to my ear.

Book Description:

Magic is necessary to all things, but too much of it is sending the emotions of the Dark Fae Court to extremes.
The Fae Nation’s championship boxing match is the highlight of the year, but there’s a chaos-creating surge of energy accompanying every exhibition bout leading up to the main event. With the championship looming, the Special Collections Team is called to Las Vegas to investigate the magical disturbances at the Red Raven casino, the home of the volatile Dark Fae Court.
But the fae are not the only ones affected by the instability. The Dark Court is a hostile environment for the SCT, dragging them closer to emotional breakdowns and lines drawn in the sand. Dangerous royals, randy revelers and relationship dramas have the Special Collections Team close to folding, until a pair of changelings ups the ante.
Excerpt:

“Can we get on with it?” Greel broke in. “I need to be on my way, and I’d be just as happy leaving now, if you lot can’t focus.”

“By all means.” Beryl’s voice dripped sugar. “If you’re scared of being torn apart by the Dark Court, your entrails served for dinner at the downstairs buffet, then do begin the briefing. I’m surprised they haven’t banged down the door for you yet, as it is.”

“I do not fear the fae,” Greel sneered.

Beryl smiled with all of her teeth showing. “You should.”

“Enough!” I raised my hands, unable to take another moment. It seemed we had learned nothing on our first case. “Just tell us what the mission is. The sooner we begin our investigations, the sooner we can get out of Las Vegas, and away from the fae.”

Beryl patted her hair. “I see you have the sense to fear the fae, Niccolo.”
I gritted my teeth to hold back my angry words, which would serve no purpose other than getting the former assassin bent out of shape. However, it was on the tip of my tongue to tell her, in no uncertain terms, that one belligerent fairy in my company was more than enough, and I did not need to surround myself with a whole Court more.

As I said, there was no reason to voice such a thing out loud, especially not to an overly emotional woman thoroughly skilled in all the ways a single finger can kill a man. And especially not when said finger sported a triangular hunk of metal large enough to rip a man’s throat open. Instead, I asked Greel to continue.

“There have been anomalies in the flow of magic through this casino.” He passed his glare around the table, staring at each of us in turn. “The disturbances have grown stronger lately, and with the exhibition matches already underway, we’ve been able to find a correlation between the power fluctuations and the bouts.”

“But that’s not surprising.” Zahra shifted in her seat, though she kept her cheek pressed to the tabletop. Her voice scraped against my eardrums like sandpaper, and she moaned in pain when

Giovanni rubbed her shoulder. “More and more people would be coming to the casino to see the championship match, right?”

Greel lifted his lip. “You are correct.”

“It’s the highlight of the year for my Nation,” Beryl told her.

“With so many fae already here,” Zahra managed to lift her head a bare inch to look at me, “and so many tourists popping in, and then all the others gathering to see the fight, it makes sense that the magic would be stronger.”

I cocked my head. “She’s right.”

“Not exactly,” Beryl protested. “Morrigan keeps the citizens of other Nations strictly prohibited to the lobby and the boxing arena, but apparently the spikes in magic are affecting the gaming floors and nightclubs, as well.”

Our angel liaison waved his hand. “The disturbances have grown beyond what’s normal for these events. The magic seems to be human.”

Book Description:

Trembling on the floor, pressed beneath a row of seats in a dark theater, college freshman Jason Tripp listens to the terrifying sound of gunshots, as an unknown shooter moves methodically through the theater, randomly murdering men, women, and children attending a student performance of Hamlet. Junior Liam Norcross drapes his massive body on top of Jason, sheltering the younger man from the deathly hail of bullets, risking his life willingly, and maybe even eagerly.

As a result of the shared horror, an extraordinary bond forms between the two young men, which causes discomfort for family and friends, as well as for Jason and Liam, themselves. And added to the challenge of two previously “straight” men falling into a same-sex love, are the complications that arise from the abundance of secrets Liam holds with regard to a past family tragedy. The fledgling passion between the men seems bound to fade away into the darkness from which it emerged.

Jason, however, is inexplicably called to rescue his hero in return, by delving into Liam’s shady past and uncovering the mystery that compels the older man to act as the college town’s selfless savior.

The Art of Hero Worship takes the reader on a voyage from the dark and chilling chaos that accompanies a mass shooting to the thrill of an unexpected and sensual romance.

Excerpt:

Pop-pop-pop....
At this point he’s in the back of the theater, and the shooting hasn’t slowed down at all. Gunshots ring out steadily in the shadowy darkness... always in sets of three, letting me know where he is. I’m scared... so fucking scared... but not too scared to wonder what I did to deserve this special little slice of hell.
And I’m frozen... I can’t even move enough to swallow my spit. I know what I have to do—I have to look for Ginny, but I can’t since I’m frozen solid, like a leg of lamb in a walk-in freezer.
Pop-pop-pop... pop-pop-pop....
“I’ve been shot! Oh, sweet Jesus, I’ve been shot!”
Earsplitting blasts of sound—one, two, three. The gunshots have a life and a plan—no, a mission—all their own, to maim and kill by ripping through the flesh of everyone in this theater. I’m panting and sweating and wishing to God I knew how to pray because I’d so pray right now.
And as suddenly as it started, the shooting stops. Is it over? With the utmost caution, I exhale the breath I’ve been hanging onto so jealously... as if part of me fears I’ll never get the chance to take another. But one more wary breath moves in and out, and I know I have to get hold of myself so I can find her. Because it’s over now.... yes, I think maybe it’s ov—
Pop-pop-pop....
Life-sucking and blood-spattering and gurgle- inducing, evenly spaced sets of three that are becoming so horribly predictable. I brace myself for the impact because I just know the next pop is going to come with excruciating pain that explodes in my head or my back or, if I’m lucky, my ass. Or, if I’m not so lucky, in all three places, one right after another.
This isn’t happening. It can’t be happening.
Is nineteen too old to want my mommy?
“Get down! Get on the floor!” Somebody yells. Too late for that. I’m already flat on the floor in the narrow space between the rows of seats; my head is bleeding all over the arm it’s resting on.... My left arm? My right arm? Somebody else’s arm? Not so sure. Not so sure it matters.
“Don’t shoot me—please don’t—”
Pop-pop-pop....
